Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for September 28, 2025!

Thanks for all the well wishes on my last post on September 7! I’m mostly over that cold but I still have an intermittent, lingering cough. I’m so tired of it!

Anyway, since I last posted, my husband finished up his work contract in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and we’ve relocated to Gainesville, Georgia for his next hospital contract. He just started on Tuesday so we haven’t had time to explore yet.

We took about 1.5 weeks to make our way from Colorado to Georgia, stopping to see a few sights along the way. We can finally mark Kansas off our “States Visited” list! We’ve somehow never even driven through. But this week I’m going to post pictures from Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. This was the 54th national park we’ve visited, out of a total of 63.

Slideshow:

  • High sand dunes rise below towering rocky mountains and a blue skky
  • Two mule deer cross a paved road with high brown sand dunes in the background
  • Stormy clouds are backlit by a hidden sun. Bushes with yellow flowers grow among dry, brown grasses
  • A bright rainbow rises above scrubland and rock-strewn mountains

  1. The sand dunes are at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. These are the tallest dunes in North America, with the tallest being 741 ft high (226 m). For reference, that’s more than twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, including her base. The entire dune field is 30 square miles (48 km2).
  2. We saw several mule deer as we explored the dunes. I love their big ears. We rented a sand sled and a sand board to play on the dunes. We got filthy and then my husband got a call from his employer saying that he needed to go right away to get a flu shot and basic physical for his next work contract. We drove straight there, trailing sand everywhere we went!
  3. We loved these storm clouds and watching the distant showers. There was a broad valley between two mountain ranges here, and we could see for miles.
  4. I kept telling my husband we would see a rainbow and my faith was finally rewarded as we left the park for the second time! This was one of the brightest rainbows we’ve ever seen. You can’t see it in this picture but there was briefly a very faint second rainbow.

  1. Just checking in on old blogging friends! I’ve been having trouble concentrating and it takes me a long time to finish a book these days.
I see you’ve been an infrequent poster lately, too, and I hope it’s because you’re busy exploring your new home and all is well!

  2. I’ve never been to Georgia other than a very long layover in Atlanta many years ago. I suspect the winter weather will be a bit nicer than Colorado? Or does it get any snow? Ice?

Marvelous photos from the national park, especially the one of the stormy sky. It looks like something out of a Stephen King movie! And, wow! What a great shot of the rainbow.

We just returned from a lovely 3-day trip to Bandon, OR. We didn’t take the RV since it was a trip for my 92-year-old mother. So relaxing just sitting on the deck or the kitchen table gazing out at the ocean.

  3. I sympathize about the lingering cough. I coughed for more than a year and visited so many doctors. None of them could figure out why I was coughing. It’s much better now but not gone. Your travels and books both look good. Enjoy your time in Georgia. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  4. I really admire you and your husband for moving every 3 months; it’s such an adventure!

Photo 3 is especially fantastic this week with those storm clouds. I enjoyed the Beltchley Riddle, I hope you do, too.

  5. It is awesome you get to travel to all these places. I do think I would be get tired of being on the road, but then again, there are so many things I want to see, LOL! I LOVE the rainbow picture. Have a great week and enjoy Georgia!

  6. Thank you for your wonderful photos and your explanations and context. What a wonderful experience you’re having. I’ve just bought the audiobook of Every Living Thing – thank you for sharing:)). It looks like a fascinating listen. Have a great week.

  7. I’m envious of all your visits to national parks. You are so close to visiting them all. Thank you so much for your photos, especially the rainbow.

I’ve been thinking about looking for Every Living Thing. I’ll be curious to hear what you think about it.
