Welcome back to (re)Viewing Last Month: September 2026, my monthly recap of the movies and television series my husband and I have been watching! Works appear in the the order in which we finished them. We didn’t watch a lot this month since we were on the road for a couple of weeks and then settling into a new location with my husband’s job (more about that later, hopefully on Sunday). But we were close to finishing a couple of shows so here we go.

Oh, and, side note, I used to track the episodes we had watched on an app called TV Time, but it shut down in July. I tried a few other tracking apps but they just weren’t the same. I liked the mix of tracking, reviews, and screenshots/memes that contributed to the more social aspect of TV Time and nothing else I tried had the same feel. Luckily, the original founder of TV Time, who sold it a few years ago, has developed another app that is very similar and he released it in early August. It’s called Bingers and, for me, it fills the void left by TV Time. So if you miss TV Time or you’re looking for a show tracking app, give Bingers a try! I recommend it! If you have your data from TV Time, you can import it. You can track movies on it too but I use Letterboxd for that.

Title: The X-Files: Season 2
Year of Release: 1994 – 1995
Seen before? Yes, when it originally aired
Based on a Book or Story? No
Reason for Watching:
I liked the show back in the day but I missed large chunks of it. I wanted to fill in the gaps.
Source:
Hulu on Disney Plus

Seasons prior to streaming were so long! My husband and I are very slowly making our way through The X-Files. My mom and my sister watched it pretty religiously back in the day but I was 15 when it began. I wasn’t a particularly social person, and I’m still not, but I did have my group of band friends and activities that kept me busy after school and on weekends. I missed a lot of the show. It’s been fun to see what I missed.

I didn’t remember much of the first season at all but I remembered more of the second season. It was startling to realize that one of my slight phobias might just stem from an episode from this season! I can point to a Stephen King short story that contributed, but this episode really left a mark. In a 25-episode season, some are going to be a lot better than others, but it was solid overall. It ends on a terrible cliffhanger that must have felt unforgivable to those who watched it when it first aired. We watched episode 1 of season 3 the next day and we almost never do that.

Title: Resident Alien: Season 4
Year of Release: 2025
Seen before? No
Based on a Book or Story? Yes. The Resident Alien graphic novels by Peter Hogan and Steven Parkhouse
Have I Read the Book? No
Reason for Watching: Finishing the series
Source: Netflix

And we found ourselves saying goodbye to Harry Vanderspeigle and the rest of the townsfolk in Patience, Colorado. Season 4 was the end of the road for Resident Alien and we were sad to see it go. Alan Tudyk is always hilarious and he was surrounded by a fantastic cast in this show. One character in particular irritated us from start to finish but otherwise, we laughed so hard through four seasons of this off-the-wall show. There were touching moments as Harry the alien learned what it means to be human and other people found ways to grow and change, but mostly we just laughed ourselves silly. The show wraps up nicely and it felt like a pretty good place to call it quits. Highly recommended.

Title: My Name is Earl: Season 4
Year of Release: 2008 -2009
Seen before? No
Based on a Book or Story? No
Reason for Watching: Finishing the show
Source: Hulu on Disney Plus

I was just looking back and I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned My Name is Earl on here. We like to keep a short sitcom going for nights when we don’t have time for anything longer or if we want to squeeze in one more little episode before going to bed. This show was perfect for that.

These characters are terrible people, but Earl is trying to change and you have to admire him for it. His brother Randy isn’t the brightest bulb but he’s loyal to Earl and helps however he can. Earl’s ex-wife Joy is absolutely horrible but actress Jaime Pressly is hilarious in the role. Seasons 1, 2, and 4 were great, as Earl makes up for some misdeed from his past every week. Season 3 went off the rails with a longer story arc that I disliked so much, I almost gave up on the show. The writers got back to the original format in season 4. Unfortunately, the show just ends, with no resolution at all, and in fact, it appeared to end on part 1 of a planned 2-parter. There’s no ultimate resolution, which is disappointing. Still, it’s easy enough to imagine Earl and Randy still fumbling their way to a more ethical life out there in Camden County somewhere.

Title: The Sheep Detectives
Year of Release: 2026
Seen before? No
Based on a Book or Story? Yes. Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, translated by Anthea Bell
Have I Read the Book? Yes, I listened to the audio book narrated by Caroline Lennon
Reason for Watching: It looked cute and we recently finished the audiobook
Source: Amazon Prime Video

I was a little worried that this movie would suffer in comparison to the book, especially since we finished listening to the audio so recently. But my husband really wanted to watch so we gave it a try.

I felt that the book and movie don’t actually have all that much in common other than the basic premise. And there’s a completely unnecessary animal death in the movie that wasn’t in the book. But the movie had a tighter plot and kept moving right along. The book meandered a bit and I got impatient with it at times. I ended up liking the movie a little more. And what’s not to like with that fantastic cast? It’s a good watch if you want something a little light, a little silly, but with some surprising depth if you’re paying attention.

That’s it for us. What did you watch last month? Anything you would recommend? What do you think of our choices?
