Welcome to my new 2026 Immigration Reading Challenge! Those of you who have been blogging for a long time may remember that Colleen from Books in the City used to host this challenge. I loved taking part in it but her blog has been inactive for 10 years now. I searched to see if anyone is currently hosting a reading challenge solely dedicated to the immigrant experience and didn’t find anything. If I’ve overlooked one, please let me know and I’ll take my challenge down and redirect my readers.
With the current anti-immigrant climate here in the United States, and to some extent in other countries as well, 2026 seems like a good year to bring this challenge back. I firmly believe that a little empathy and understanding can help us put aside our differences, stop seeing people as “other” or “less than,” and find common ground and ways to live together peacefully. That’s a tall order for a reading challenge, but change has to start somewhere, right? I hope you’ll join me as I try to read more books that explore the stories of people who have immigrated.
Table of Contents
Rules
- You can read fiction or nonfiction
- The book’s author does not have to be an immigrant, though a first-hand perspective would be a nice bonus
- You can read books about people who have immigrated to any country. I am not limiting the challenge to those who have immigrated to the United States
- You can read books meant for any age group
- Crossovers with other challenges are fine
- Any format that you choose is also acceptable
- The challenge will run from January 1 through December 31, 2026
- A blog is not required for participation; you can also link to reviews on other sites such as GoodReads, Instagram, etc.
- Sign up anytime throughout the year
- I’ve tried to keep this simple but if you have any questions, reach out in the comments, via social media (links in my sidebar), or my contact form.
- Most importantly, have fun!

Hello There!
I’m excited to participate in this challenge! Thank you so much for hosting! My “Announcement Post” will be on 1.17.26. ๐
Does these have to be new books read or can we include past posts of books that fit this category/challenge?
Harvee https://harvee44.blogspot.com/
The books should be read this year, so unfortunately that means no past posts. If this is something you’ve read a lot of, I could add a link to an immigration tag on your blog in the recommended books section of this post though
Ok. I could send you the links to the posts in question? By email? Which email would I use, if so?

I would like to focus on books for our youngest readers, picture books, but I may also read a few books for grownups, too.
I’ve read some really good children’s books about immigration. The Arrival by Shaun Tan and Gibberish by Young Vo are two that immediately come to mind.
I’m so down for this challenge. Thanks for hosting!
Yay! Thanks for joining!
What a great idea! Does it count if the author is an immigrant or only if immigration is the subject of the book?
Good question! Any book featuring immigration will count, no matter the author’s status. I’ll update my post. Thanks for pointing that out!
