The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan: Book Review
I’m a little out of practice with my reviews, but I’m having a hard time putting my feelings about this book into words. On the one hand, I would actually love to see this as a movie, filmed in the style of Schindler’s List. The world is bleak but lends itself well to the unexpected pops of color I remember from Spielberg’s […]
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins: Book Review
So. I haven’t re-read any of the original novels since they were first published and I haven’t re-watched any of the movies since their respective releases. So I’m fuzzy on those plot points. But this didn’t do much to further the broader story. Snow is a manipulative prick. We know that. All I learned in this book is that he […]
Stars Above by Marissa Meyer: Book Review
4 Stars. I needed these Lunar short stories to get some closure after the emotional turmoil of Winter. (I was so angry at Levana that I almost gave up on the book. It was that torturous). When I realized that this book was happening, I jumped on it as soon as I possibly could at the library. Most of the stories are prequels to Cinder […]
Winter by Marissa Meyer: Book Review
3 Stars. I’m exhausted. Emotionally and physically exhausted. Because of my library’s policies, I had two weeks to listen to a 21-part audio book, when it normally takes me that long to listen to about 10 parts. Because I love this series, I buckled down and did it. This can’t have been good for my blood pressure. I only thought […]
Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok: Book Review
4.5 Stars. This book was so heartbreaking so much of the time. I adored Kimberly. She’s such a good daughter, friend, and student. She’s trying so hard to be everything to everyone. Her life is always hard, but it’s hardest when she first arrives, with no comprehension of American culture and little comprehension of the language […]
The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley: Book Review
4 Stars. Man, this took me right back to my tween years. I can’t begin to explain it because I’ve never read this book before, but it just had that ’80s feel. It’s a quest book with a strong female lead, short and to the point. The author isn’t trying to get a movie deal or spread a plot thinly over a never-ending series. I did get worried […]
Armada by Ernest Cline: Book Review
3 Stars. I didn’t even realize Ernest Cline had published a new book until I saw Sheila over at Book Journey mention it. I knew I had to get my hands on the audio. I loved Cline’s first book, Ready Player One, but didn’t realize that Wil Wheaton narrated the audio version until after I’d read it in print. I wasn’t going to miss […]
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige: Book Review
Amy Gumm can’t wait to get out of Kansas. A smart girl who doesn’t fit in with her classmates, she’s always the butt of their jokes. Her mom disconnected years ago, leaving Amy to take care of both of them. Still, she doesn’t expect to leave Kansas like this. When a tornado blows through Amy’s […]
Fairest by Marissa Meyer: Book Review
3.5 Stars. I’m finding this hard to rate. On the one hand, it is well-written and exciting and everything that I expect from this series. On the other hand, it’s Levana. Oh my gosh! I despise this character! I tried hard to find something to like and to see her as more of a victim than a victimizer and that worked for maybe the […]
Curtsies & Conspiracies by Gail Carriger: Book Review
Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has taken boys on board and is heading to London. Sophronia knows that something is afoot, if she can only figure out just what it is. Someone seems to be determined to kidnap Dimity and her brother (What is his name? I can’t be bothered to […]
Cress by Marissa Meyer: Book Review
4 Stars. Holy smokes. When does the next one come out? November? *sigh* For some reason, I thought this series was a trilogy, so I expected everything to be wrapped up neatly. I just got more and more stressed out as everything fell apart. Let’s face it–Cinder and company are very much the underdogs. But things just got worse […]
