Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics: Book Review
Oh my goodness. This scared me to death! I got worried that I was going to have to put it aside. I gladly read most horror but one trope in particular seriously gives me nightmares and this book went there. I soldiered on though and holy cow, what a ride this was! I keep seeing it compared to a horror version of Little House on […]
The Deep by Alma Katsu: Book Review
I liked this well enough. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the Titanic and the paranormal elements. I was never entirely sure what was going on, although I did have all the pieces pretty early in the story. It is refreshing when I can’t quite put everything together. My biggest quibble is that the story could have been tightened up […]
Fable by Adrienne Young: Book Review
This was exactly the kind of book that I needed right now. It was fast-paced with characters I liked who acted in ways that largely made sense to me. Fable is a survivor who will do a lot of things to get by but she does have her own set of morals. She has a bit of the hopeful optimist about her. Most people would hate the…
Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles: Book Review
I wanted to like this. The concept is strong and I couldn’t help comparing it to The Night Circus, another book I wanted to love. But there was way too much description, infinitely too many unanswered questions, and too little actual plot to please me. This is author Janella Angeles’s debut novel and unfortunately, it shows. She…
Giant Days Volume One by John Allison: Book Review
I loved these young ladies! They’re funny and they make mistakes but they’re loyal and there for each other. I related a lot to both Susan and Daisy. When Daisy asks about book club on her birthday, I howled with laughter! That is so me! I’m not quite sure about Esther and her drama but at least she doesn’t actively…
Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston: Book Review
These books! I keep saying this but I grin until my face hurts while I’m reading them! Even when the story takes a troubled turn, I smile in anticipation of the eventual Happily Ever After…
The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys: Book Review
4 Stars. The Fountains of Silence does a wonderful job of presenting the dichotomy of the face that Spain presented to the world and the underlying darkness of the 1950s. Daniel is a wealthy Texas oil baron’s son staying in the American hotel that literally used to be a castle. By starting from his point of view, Sepetys begins with the […]
The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston: Book Review
This series is completely adorable! Which makes it sound like it’s for younger kids, but it is written for young adults. Still–I’m going to let adorable stand. There are so many things to love in this book. I love that Imogen has two mothers and her brother is gay. I love that everyone at Excelsicon is so unabashedly geeky. […]
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins: Book Review
This was so much fun! I devoured it. Sophie is clumsy and goofy and funny and just so relatable to every girl who wasn’t part of the beautiful mean girl crowd in high school. Jenna is adorable. How can you dislike a vampire whose favorite color is hot pink? The pacing of the mystery is spot-on and while I had theories that got a […]
Geekerella by Ashley Poston: Book Review
5 Stars. So, this is not the cleanest edit and it’s not Literature, but I grinned from ear-to-ear the entire time I was reading. I couldn’t wait to see how it ended but at the same time, I didn’t want it to end. It’s an adorable retelling of Cinderella set in the geeky fandom world, and I loved every minute of it […]
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins: Book Review
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but this is one of those rare books–a second that is actually better than the first. In my humble opinion anyway. I read all 391 pages in two sittings, really in one day. I picked it up, got sucked into Katniss’s world, and never looked away. We got to see a little more of Gale in this story […]
