In conjunction with the Southern Literature Challenge I’m hosting, I would like to start a new (hopefully) weekly feature called Saturdays in the South. Here’s what I’m thinking.

I would like to spotlight authors of Southern literature, Southern booksellers, and the publishers and publicists who work with them in guest posts and possibly giveaways. My purpose in hosting the Southern Literature Challenge is to encourage readers from all areas to read Southern literature and discover the wonderful authors we have here. I think that giving people “in the biz” a space to write about Southern literature will help me with my goal.

I personally define Southern literature as any book by an author from the South and set primarily in the South. I include all genres and age groups. Fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, romance, young adult, adult–it all counts for me. There’s a reason your book is set in the South, no matter the story you’re telling. (Hint: Southern literature will almost invariably mention setting in the book’s description. It’s as important to the book as plot, character, or dialog.)

Here’s what I consider to be the South:

South Carolina
Georgia
Alabama
North Carolina
Virginia
Tennessee
Mississippi
Louisiana
Kentucky
West Virginia
Texas
Arkansas
Florida

I don’t have any specific ideas for guest posts, so pretty much anything goes, although I would like it to fit in at least a little with the Southern theme. It can be something about your book and why it’s set in the South, your personal memories from the South, a favorite recipe that might tie into your book–really, there’s a lot of room to play with this. You guys are the creative ones–have fun!

I hope to get this started with the new year. If you’re interested, please fill out the form below. I don’t expect a post right away; we’ll first decide on a posting date that works for both of us. I ask that you get your post to me two weeks early in order to give me plenty of time to get it formatted and scheduled. If you have a specific date in mind (near a publication date, for example), please let me know in the form and I will do my best to work with you.

I will, or course, include links and/or bios with your posts.

Please help me spread the word! I am terribly shy when it comes to contacting individuals and asking if they would like to participate in something like this, so I need all the help I can get!

If anyone (including bloggers and other readers) has any questions or suggestions, please post them in the comments. Thank you so much for your interest!

  1. Have you read any books by Ferrol Sams? He was popular in the 1980s when I lived in GA.

I love to hear from you! Please contact me (menu bar, above) if you're having trouble commenting.
