Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for June 7, 2026!

Hello again! My husband and I wrapped up his time working in Florida and moved on to his next work assignment at the hospital in Marquette, Michigan, on the Upper Peninsula, a couple of weeks ago. We’ve been to very few of the states surrounding the Great Lakes so we’re excited to see completely new sights!

My husband had a long weekend over Memorial Day so we drove down to Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were both lovely cities. We really loved the architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Doesn’t it look like a huge ship on Lake Michigan? The outer layer on the lower “mast” automatically extends and retracts a couple of times a day but it was undergoing scheduled maintenance while we were there so we didn’t see that.

We were thrilled to find the “Bronze Fonz” on Milwaukee’s Riverwalk! I barely remember watching the show Happy Days when I was young but I either didn’t know or had forgotten that it was set in Milwaukee. My family asked so I’ll mention it here for any inquiring readers–I don’t believe there are any tributes to Laverne & Shirley (a spinoff show also mostly set in Milwaukee), though I did find a Laverne & Shirley tour that’s offered about once a month. It was not scheduled the weekend we were there. I was disappointed because it sounded like a lot of fun.

We were surprised by how small Green Bay is, considering that it’s home to such a legendary football team. My husband is a Miami Dolphins fan, not a Packers fan, but he still wanted to tour Lambeau Field because it’s so iconic. I don’t watch football at all but I have to admit that it was cool to sit in one of the boxes in the stadium and then go down and walk out the tunnel that the team emerges from and out onto the sidelines (the groundskeepers understandably don’t want tourists on the actual field).

Last weekend we visited Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It’s beautiful! We hiked around in the afternoon, grabbed a beef pasty for dinner (a Cornish hand pie; the UP of Michigan is known for them), then headed out for a sunset cruise along the cliffs. Natural minerals seep out and cause a myriad of colors. It was a beautiful experience but we were frozen! Lake Superior is still very cold to us but we see some hardy locals (known as Yoopers; I think it’s a corruption of UP-ers) sunbathing and splashing around in the shallows. Brrr! Not us!

Slideshow:

  • A relatively low white building appears to sail on Lake Michigan. A few skyscrapers rise in the background
  • A bronze statue of a man giving two thumbs up. The man appears to be wearing a leather jacket, jeans, and has a slicked-back 1950s hairstyle
  • A picture taken from almost ground level of the green grass of a football stadium with the bleachers and a Jumbotron above
  • A white boat cruises by in the turquoise waters of Lake Superior. Golden sand and black and white cliffs make up the shoreline
  • An arch in the yellow cliffs. The dark blue waters of a lake are below. The cliffs are mostly yellowish in the evening light but there are streaks of other colors present
