Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for September 7, 2025!

I’ve been fighting a cold all week. Yuck. I tested for covid twice and I was negative both times but I just can’t quite kick this thing to the curb. I don’t tolerate any cold or sinus meds well so I just have to suffer through every sniffle, cough, and snort. Poor me! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was finally feeling well enough by Saturday to hike with my husband, Kleenexes in hand. We went to the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area and hiked to Crater Lake. My sister and I hiked this same trail when she visited in early July but this was my husband’s first time. It is a beautiful area and one that seems to grace a lot of calendars. My pictures below are from my visit with my sister in July (My hands were too full of Kleenexes and hiking poles to take many pictures on Saturday).

Slideshow:

  • Jagged peaks are reflected in a shallow lake
  • Jagged peaks rise above a shallow lake, with downed logs and yellow and white wildflowers in the foreground
  • A little brown rodent with big round ears sits on a rock surrounded by other rocks that make up its den
  • Jagged peaks rise above a distant forest and a nearer green meadow

  1. Crater Lake. It had almost dried up when my husband and I visited last week. I don’t know if that’s normal as we get close to autumn or if that’s because of the extreme drought western Colorado has experienced this year.
  2. Maroon Lake. I don’t think we quite hit peak wildflower season in early July but we were close enough.
  3. A pika! This little cutie popped out right beside the trail as my sister and I walked by. It saw us then settled in, seemingly for a nice little chat with us, like Ratty or Mole! They make the cutest little peeping calls.
  4. This is facing away from Maroon Lake. There was a wedding party on the far side of the meadow, just at the edge of the trees. What a wedding venue!

Last week I said that I was reading Cuba: A New History by Richard Gott but I didn’t get very far before I had to return it to the library. I’ll pick it up again at some point so I’m adding it back to my “to-read” list instead of adding it to my “Did Not Finish” pile.

Up Next:

My husband and I are taking a road trip this week so we’ve decided to listen to The Dog Stars by Peter Heller as we drive. We listened to Heller’s book The River a while back and enjoyed it so much that I recommended it to my sister. She couldn’t find it at the time so she read The Dog Stars instead and told me that we need to listen to it before we leave Colorado. Duly noted.

What did your week look like?

  1. Sorry to hear you’ve been sick, but good for you to test for Covid. I know a lot of people have stopped testing, which I don’t understand, but whatever! I got my flu and Covid shots today, so I’m relieved that I’ll have some protection going into the holiday season. I hope you start to feel better soon! (Now that I look at the date of your post, I really hope you are completely recovered by now!)

I didn’t realize there are two Crater Lakes! I doubt the one in Oregon will ever dry up. Pretty photo of the lake and surrounding mountains! And what a sweet little pika. I’ve never seen one in the wild. Yes, that is quite a wedding venue. Wow!

Did you enjoy The Dog Stars on audio? I love that novel and keep meaning to read it again.

  2. Crater Lake looks beautiful (again). I do hope you start to feel better soon. Not kicking a cold feels pretty miserable.

  3. I missed seeing the pika the first time through so had to look again. Cute. Another great tramp, through beautiful land. Hampered by the cold though! Hope you are rid of it soon.

  4. I love the photos, especially the wildflowers (the angle you took the picture is perfect). I hope your cold is finally letting you go.

In addition to your photos, I also love seeing what you are reading. You often seem to find nonfiction that sounds good to me.
