Weekly Update at Introverted Reader

Welcome to my weekly update for August 20, 2023!

I hope those of you in the path of tropical storm Hilary are staying safe. We’ve been keeping an eye on it because my husband’s cousin and his family live in San Diego. They’re all good so far. We’re supposed to get some rain off the storm here in northern Idaho on Monday. We really need it. There are several wildfires around us, some evacuations, and the air is pretty smoky. None of the fires are close enough to threaten us (fingers crossed), and as far as I know there have been few injuries and little loss of property, but rain would help the firefighters out.

We rode the longest gondola in North America (3.1 miles/5 km) at Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho on Friday evening. It was about 100° F (38° C) all last week but on Friday, the temperatures dropped and the wind rolled in. The wind made that long gondola ride interesting, to say the least! The views were beautiful and we had a BBQ dinner and listened to some live country music. We didn’t stay too long because it was about 70° F (21° C) and windy on top of the mountain. I felt bad for the ladies who were dressed for a summer barbecue in cute sundresses and sandals. I was wearing jeans, a t-shirt, a cardigan, and sneakers and I was still chilly

Saturday was Bookstore Romance Day so I visited my current local bookstore, The Well-Read Moose. They were offering 10% off all romances, including fantasy romances, a free chocolate bar, and a free blind date with a romance book. I’m not typically a romance reader but I took a look anyway and came away with some winners!

  • An orange sun sets behind some purple clouds with a road and RV in the foreground
  • Green mountains fade away into the distance with blue skies and wispy white clouds above
  • An orange sun burns through smoky skies over mountains and a ski lift
  • Three books and a chocolate bar
  • One book

  1. We have nice sunsets in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho fairly often but I actually made my way outside to take a picture of this one. We stay in our RV while my husband is working a hospital contract but that is not our RV in the picture.
  2. A view from Kellogg Mountain, where the gondola ride ended. There were other chairlifts located there that the resort uses in the ski season.
  3. Looking west toward Coeur d’Alene from Kellogg Mountain. You can see the wildfire smoke in that direction.
  4. My Bookstore Romance Day goodies. I bought The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton. I got the chocolate bar and the wrapped “blind date” book for free. The blind date book wrapping describes the book inside with the following words: “rom-com, fake dates, trans, cooks.”
  5. When I opened my blind date book, I found an ARC of Chef’s Choice by TJ Alexander. It’s the second book in a series but my library has the first one so I’m good to go!

  1. Here those rides are called Sky Ride and I love them! Never ridden one when it was windy and probably wouldn’t like it much. Have fun with your sister!

  2. I would be terrified on the gondola ride. lol Not afraid of heights, but afraid of things suspended on cables. I would still do it though.

  3. I love a good gondola ride; I find them so relaxing (but maybe not in high winds!).

Have a wonderful time with your sister. My brother has been here for about a week and it’s been wonderful.

  4. Ugh. A gondola ride sounds like fun, but not in the wind. I suppose they would have closed it, had the winds been too gusty. Long walk down, though, huh? 🙂

Those fires in B.C., Washington, Idaho, and Oregon are so awful. We got so lucky with the timing of our trip to Canada this summer. My heart breaks for everyone who has to evacuate, as well as those who have lost their homes. 🙁

Enjoy your visit with your sister!

  5. Have a fun visit with your sister! I’m in California but not in the path of the storm. I’m hoping that we see some rain from it, but so far that’s not looking likely where I am. I hope it helps with the fires near you!

  6. Sounds like you had a good week. The gondola ride sounds interesting. Your books look and sound good too. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  7. I like your book choices of Northanger Abbey and Persepolis: I’ve enjoyed both of them. Idaho sounds like a fun place — I’ve been there a couple of times and it was beautiful.

  8. I hope you have a great time with your sister this next week.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of Idaho. I don’t know much about Idaho.

The bookstore hosted a fun event. I love a surprise!
