Sunday Salon

So here I am in the Tampa airport. I’ve been here for 7 hours because our plane needs repairs. They’ve just announced that it could be another 3 hours and started offering up vouchers for overnight stays. We’re giving up and taking them up on it.

We flew down for my brother-in-law’s beach wedding and it was beautiful. I hadn’t met his new wife before but she seems like someone I’ll like a lot. I mostly managed to avoid getting sunburned but my face is tomato red. Except for the white raccoon eyes. Yes, I’m looking fabulous!

Anyway, I hope this hotel has HBO! We had carefully timed our flights so that we would be home for the premiere of A Game of Thrones on HBO. I gave my husband orders to get HBO about a year and a half ago so that I would be ready to watch this show. I don’t think they had even finished casting it at that point! I hate movie covers but my husband has had to put up with me snatching up the book with the new cover and exclaiming, “I’m so excited!  It’s going to be so good!”

No, my hopes aren’t too high. Not at all.

I am super-excited and the few actors that I know already are going to be absolutely perfect in their roles. Boromir as Eddard Stark? Couldn’t pick a better actor!

If you haven’t read these books by George R. R. Martin, I highly recommend them. I’ve only read the first two but they both got an easy five stars, and if you’ve been around here much you know I don’t really give those out very lightly. They have a perfect epic scope for a fantastic tv series. At least check out the first episode tonight if you have HBO!

So what do you think? Are you going to watch tonight?  Have you read the books?  And what do you think of movie covers?

  1. So, what did you think?

I read the the first two books so long ago that I forgot a lot of the minor details and any images of the characters that I might have created. I thought there was a lot of gratuitous nudity, but other than that, I liked it.

I am curious as to other people's opinions.

  2. I will be interested to hear what you think of the series since you read the books. My hubby read the first two saw the commercials(we don't have HBO) and said something seems off.

  3. I hope you got to watch. I don't have HBO and I'm a little sad. But I think I'd rather check out the books first, anyway.

  4. Game of Thrones looks really interesting. I have never read it – I hope you enjoy the TV adaptation. Oddly, before I came over to your blog, I was reading an article in the New Yorker about GRR Martin and the huge weight of expectation put on him by some of his most ardent fans. Check it out if you haven't read it, it's fascinating: newyorker.com/reporting/2011/04/11/110411fa_fact_miller?currentPage=1

  5. I don't have HBO at the moment…I kept it long enough to watch Mildred Pierce, which I loved because of Kate Winslet.

Every few months I switch my movie channels around to take advantage of specials and freebies. Now I have the Showtime/Starz/AMC/ etc. package.

    Hope you enjoy the show.

  6. You're probably enjoying "A Game of Thrones" as I type this!

Thank goodness you took them up on the hotel voucher – we waited once, and found there was 'no room at the inn' when we finally gave up on waiting for the plane. Lesson learned!

Glad the weekend wedding was fun and positive (and, better raccoon eyes than a sunburn!).

  7. I am rereading A Game of Thrones right now and am loving it. I wish I had HBO just for this, but I guess for now I'll have to live with rereading the first one and then getting into the second one. I think I might have read that too, but honestly I can't remember if I finished it or not. What I do know, though, is that I'm loving the series thus far.

  8. Ahh, airport woes. The vouchers to hope for are the upgrades to first class when coach is over-full. Those are the good kind.

  9. I hope this show is everything you are expecting. Good luck!
