I meant to post this last weekend, but I got busy and forgot.
I got to see Wicked! I feel like I’m the last person in the world to see it, but it was a huge deal for me! I love musicals, whether they’re on stage or on the screen. Call me cheesy if you want, but I’m a huge fan.
A touring company came to a city near us and we bought tickets pretty early. That’s a good thing because I’m pretty sure the 2.5 week run is sold out. The day of the show, the forecasters were calling for some nasty icy stuff to come through, so we decided to leave early and book a hotel. Good thing too. The show was only about an hour and a half away from home, but it’s all downhill or uphill and we would have been in a mess if we’d tried to get home at midnight. We probably wouldn’t have gotten home. They had to close the interstates for a while to try to catch up with the clean up.
Anyway, we got to the hotel and saw that a nearby restaurant that we’ve always been interested in but never tried was having a “Wicked Buffet.” I’m a picky eater. Buffets aren’t usually worth the money for me, but my husband, the skinny little thing, usually eats enough for both of us, so we decided to go. It was fun! We were on the third floor of this restaurant that looked like it was a converted warehouse, with all the exposed brickwork and wooden beams showing. They had white Christmas lights wrapped around the beams, and some green theatrical lights set up to give us a little Wicked ambiance. Not very flattering to the complexion, but still just fun. All the tables were decked out with black and green tablecloths and the soundtrack to the musical was playing overhead. We ate and had a good time and strolled on over to the theater.
Oh. My. Goodness. We loved it! Our Elphaba had actually played the part on Broadway, and what a voice she had! When she let loose, we felt like our cheeks must be flapping like they do in all those space movies! I’m not sure if Glinda had been on Broadway, but she was great too. She pretty much stole the show, and I’m not sure if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. But she was perfect and she had us cracking up! It’s been years since I’ve read the book, but I’m pretty sure they changed quite a few things for the musical. I told my sister about it and she said it sounded like it. I hate to say it, but the musical was actually better than the book. Bad reader, bad! I know! But it was.
Oh, and I’m so glad to finally know how to say Elphaba. I tripped all over that name when I read the book, and finally decided on el-FAY-buh. Wrong! It’s EL-fuhbuh. Just in case you were wondering too. 🙂
Our favorite musical is still Les Misérables, but this beat out The Phantom of the Opera to take a close second. If you haven’t seen all of these shows and you get the opportunity, go check them out! I love them all.

Lady Quinlan, you really should see Les Mis if you ever get the chance. I expected something different from the book, and I really didn't remember much about it anyway, so I wasn't too upset that they'd messed with it. If I'd liked it more or remembered it better, I might have felt like you.
I saw Wicked in Chicago three years ago. I didn't know anything about it before I went. It was a nice outing, going to the theater always is, but I wasn't overly impressed. I kept thinking, No! That's not the way it happened! Stop messing with the story! Phantom and CATS still top my list. (I can sing every word of each 🙂 Haven't seen Les Mis yet.
I saw Beauty and the Beast, but I love the movie so much that I was a little disappointed in it.
I'm pretty sure I know most of the songs of Phantom by heart. I owned that soundtrack years before I ever got to see the show. 🙂
I enjoyed Wicked – went there not knowing anything about the story line (apart from the "pre-story" of wizard of oz) and was pleasantly surprised 🙂
I still like Phantom better though – probably because I know the songs better. Les Mis is very touching. Another one I like is Beauty and the Beast – I am not a Disney fan, but I love the song, and I was amazed by the set – how they can change to different setting just by turning things around here and there.
